How To Make Your Natural Perfume Last Longer

It's becoming more well-known that botanical perfumes tend not to have the sillage - ie. the trail of scent left lingering in the air - of synthetic fragrances. This is because clean, natural perfumes don’t include the synthetic molecules and chemical additives which have specifically been engineered to project a strong scent trail and last for hours and hours on the skin.

Wearing and enjoying a natural perfume requires an adjustment period - and trust me, as someone who used to be an avid perfume collector (before I eventually realised the harmful side effects these beautiful bottles were contributing to my health), I also needed time to get used to not having that "cloud of scent" around me even after a full working day.

If you have recently switched to a natural perfume (hooray!) but are wanting to make your new scent last a little bit longer, here are some tips to keep in mind.

5 TIPS TO MAKE YOUR NATURAL PERFUME LAST LONGER:

skin loving perfume oil application

1. Well-hydrated skin holds fragrance better.

Apply your botanical perfume straight after you shower, but moisturise your skin first to create a base to anchor the scent and help make it last longer on the skin.

2. Dab, don’t rub.

Lightly dab your wrists together once you’ve applied your perfume - rubbing your wrists causes friction which dulls the delicate top notes and makes them evaporate faster.

3. Apply on your hair as well.

Did you know that our hair can retain perfume for a really long time? Instead of using an alcohol base, which can be drying for the hair, each Aruem perfume contains certified organic jojoba oil which is incredibly nourishing on the skin, and just as beneficial for your hair too.

4. Layering.

The Aruem perfumes are designed to be worn on its own, or layered together. Layering fragrances which complement each other not only creates a unique scent experience, but also helps to increase the perfume’s staying power. As a general rule of thumb, you should always start with the heavier or stronger scent first, and then follow with a lighter perfume - this is typically the citrus or floral-based scents.

To make it easier for you, we have created our Scent Duets specifically for this purpose.

5. Store carefully.

Finally, keep your perfume bottle away from heat and humidity as much as possible. This will increase its longevity and to prevent the volatile fragrance notes from breaking down faster. We recommend keeping your bottle in its eco luxe paper box and store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

Remember: when you apply a natural fragrance, especially an oil-based perfume like ours, it creates  a more intimate experience as the scent wears very close to your skin and is detectable only by those closest to you.

Botanical perfumes are designed to be more discreet, but once you get used to wearing them, you will soon begin to appreciate the gentle nuances and enjoy the complexities of the individual natural ingredients used in these elixirs.
